TRAINING ELECTRICAL SAFETY PROCEDURES

DESCRIPTION

Electricity  is  accepted as a source of power without much thought to
the   hazards   encountered.  Some  employees  work  with  electricity
directly.  This  is  the case with engineers, electricians, electronic
technicians and power line workers. Others, such as office workers and
salespeople  work  with  it  indirectly.  OSHA’s  electrical standards
address  this serious workplace hazard which exposes employees to such
dangers  as  electric  shock, electrocution, fires and explosions. The
objective  of  the  standards  is to minimize the potential hazards by
specifying  design  characteristics  of  safety  in  use of electrical
equipment and systems

Â

OBJECTIVE
* Describe  four types of injuries that may result from contact with
electricity
* List  the three main electrical hazards that may be encountered at
a worksite
* Discuss  at  least  three  methods  of  protection from electrical
hazards
* Describe the function of a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)
* Name  at  least  three  warning  signs or clues that an electrical
hazard exists
* Electrical safety procedures
* Improve recognition of electrical safety hazards

Â

OUTLINE

1. General Information
* Special Hazards of Electricity
+ Electrical Shock
+ Electrical Burns
+ Electrical Fires
+ Only Qualified Workers may work on electrical equipment
+ Electricity causes 10% of job related deaths

2. How Electricity Works
* Conductors
* Insulators
* Grounding

3. Definitions
* Qualified Employees, Special Training
* Unqualified  Employees, Awareness Training, not allowed to work on
electrical equipment

4. Types of Electrical Hazards
* Working on energized (hot) circuits
* Loose connections
* Frayed or missing insulation
* Missing ground prongs on plugs
* Water and electricity don’t mix
* Damaged power tools
* Ungrounded equipment
* Improper use of extension cords

5. Electrical Protection
* Electrical Safety Rules
* Lock out–Tag out
* Properly grounded electrical circuits
* Ground fault protection near water sources
* Insulated power tools
* Electrically rated personal protective equipment
* Proper housekeeping
* Don’t overload circuits

TRAINING KNOW THAT A KEY COMPONENT TO A SUCCESSFUL ELECTRICAL SAFETY

INTRODUCTION

Electricity is an inherently dangerous but versatile source of energy.
When  it  is  utilized  according to sound safety principles, personal
injury  and property damage can be effectively prevented. This section
contains general information for the safe use of electricity.

The  course  provides you with working knowledge and best practices to
help   implement  programs  in  the  areas  of  electrical  safety  at
workplaces.

COURSE OVERVIEW

After attending the course, participants should be able to:
* Understand  the accountability for installation and maintenance of
equipment are most at risk.
* Understand  that  Arc  flash incidents, shock and electrical burns
result in employee injury and stress, lost productivity, equipment
damage and operational downtime.
* Know  that  a  key  component  to  a  successful electrical safety
program  is  to  be aware of current best practices, standards and
regulations.

COURSE OUTLINE

* Industrial Safety/Electrical Shock
* Arc flash hazard protection
* Accident prevention
* Preventative electrical maintenance
* Personal  Protective  Equipments  (PPE)  and equipment for working
around electrical hazards
* Lockout procedures
* High voltage procedures

Â

 PARTICIPANTS

* Occupational Health& Safety staffs
* Plant Maintenance Managers and Supervisors
* Electrical Contractors and Electricians
* Electrical   Professionals   in  the  industrial,  commercial  and
institutional sectors
* Anyone   with   responsibility   for  the  safety  of  workers  or
contractors
